The aim of the present study was to (i) determine the post abortal acceptance of contraception in women with spontaneous or induced abortions (ii) analyze the trends in MTP over 3 years period and the impact of family welfare programmes. The study design is an observational descriptive type, which includes both retrospective and prospective studies (1st July 2008 to 30th June 2011). The study population includes, all women admitted in hospital with spontaneous or induced abortion and acceptance of contraception by them, either temporary (spacing: Cu-T) or permanent (terminal) methods. The data was compiled and analysis was done by using SPSS software. Categorical data were compared using Chi-square or Fisher’s exact test where appropriate, Continuous variables were analyzed with Student’s t-test. Total number of women who had abortions (spontaneous or induced) was 1077. Induced abortions accounted for 56.3% and spontaneous abortions were 43.7%. Acceptance of contraception methods in the population studied was 57.8%. In conclusion, the impact of national family welfare programs is evident from increase in MTP seekers and in contraception acceptance. MTP in appropriate settings is safe. Greater emphasis is needed on spacing methods.
