3. Isolation and partial characterization of alkaloids from stem bark of Nyctanthes arbor-tristis

The present study was undertaken to partially characterize the unknown alkaloids from methanol extract of stem bark of Nyctanthes arbor-tristis. Initially crude alkaloids were extracted by dichloromethane extraction. Then, TLC characterization was done for crude alkaloid extract and the presence of alkaloids was identified by Dragendroff’s reagent. Further characterization of alkaloids was done by HPTLC and NMR studies. In HPTLC five peaks were obtained having different Rf values with different percentage of area representing as unknown compounds, hypothetically these may contain different unknown alkaloids, so it is further partially characterized by 2D-NMR, which showed the presence of new methyl hydroxyl group of alkaloids.
