ABSTRACT
Background/Objective: With the advent of MDCT, pulmonary CT Angiography (CTPA) has substantially gained in spatial resolution and is the accepted me-thod of choice to diagnosis and rule out of acute pul-monary embolism (PE).Our purpose was to evaluate the use and quality of MD-CTPA in our department, and follow up the patients outcome."nPatients and Methods: A total of 120 consecutive pa-tients with clinically suspected PE who referred to MD-CTPA studies were assessed during one year pe-riod. Contiguous 0.6mm sections were acquired through the entire thorax after injection of 80ml of contrast material at a rate of 4ml/sec. CT studies was interpreted by two radiologists. Outcome of patients was evaluated by review of records during hospitali-zation and interview with physicians."nResults: MD-CTPA was positive in 45 (37.5%) of ad-missions. Seventeen cases had bilateral and 27 had isolated peripheral PE and one had total occlusion of left main pulmonary artery. Ninety nine percent of the examinations had satisfactory filling of contrast material including the segmental and sub segmental arteries. CT also detected various ancillary findings as consolidation, pleural effusion, nodules or tumor in nearly half the patients. Surgical embolectomy was performed in one patient and anticoagulant therapy in others, and clinical improvement had been re-corded in all of the patients. In patients with a nega-tive MD-CTPA, pulmonary embolism did not occur during follow up period, with or without anticoagu-lant therapy."nConclusion: The quality of MDCT pulmonary an-giography was satisfactory as a first line imaging of PE. CT also showed additional important pathologies in the chest.
