In 1992 the construction of the Urra I hydroelectric begins, oneof the most ambitious energy projects in the recent history ofColombia. Located in the inhospitable jungle region of HighSinú –northwest of the Andean territory– the environmentallicense granted by government entities ignored the ecologicaland environmental impacts the work would entail, and alsofailed to recognize the presence of the emberákatio indigenouspeople, whose constitutional rights were violated. Followingthe arguments presented by the economist Karl Polanyi, thearticle explores the environmental, social and cultural consequencescaused by the energy project, in addition to delving inthe strategy of violence and extermination that paramilitarismcreated to disrupt the organizational processes for the emberákatios, which resulted in the disappearance and murder ofindigenous leaders.
