Cassia occidentalis is used in the traditional medicine system as diuretic. In the present studyacute toxicity and diuretic activity of ethanolic extract of Cassiaoccidentalis (200 & 400mg/kg b.w, p.o) was evaluated on wistar strain albino rats. The activity was compared with furosemide (4 mg/kg b.w, i p) as standard drug. Results revealed that the extract acts as diuretic because of increased urinary electrolyte concentration with significant increase in the urinary output. Theincrease in the ratio of concentration of excreted sodium and potassium ion for the test extracts, compared to control, indicates that the extracts increasespotassium ion excretion to a greater extent than sodium ion, which is very essential quality of a good diuretic.
