Keywords: Xerophitic flora | Biogeography

In some Andean valleys, at least in Colombia and Venezuela, there are often regions of xerophitic vegetation surrounded by formations of mesomorphic and even hygromorphic vegetation, in Venezuela, these have been designed as “bolsones áridos”. Such regions are of great biogeograpfic and floristic interest due to their not yet fully discerned relationship with the xerophitic vegetation of the Caribbean coastal plains and have been of our concern for almost 20 years. The essay we present is a reflexion on the origin of the different taxa that integrate this vegetation, more from an evolutionary and adaptative view rather than a biogegrapical or vegetational one.
