ABSTRACT
The comparative study of the foliar anatomy from 34 Lychnophora species showed the presence of xerophytic characters. The presence of adaxial surface pubescens, cuticle thickness, adaxial epidermis layering, aquiferous parenchyma and several types of trichomes in the leaf abaxial surface allowed to confirm the existence of six sections. Chronopappus and Sphaeranthus are considered the most primitives, Lychnophora and Lychnophoriopsis the most derived and Lychnophorioides and Lychnocephaliopsis as intermediates.
