ANTIMICROBIAL POTENCY OF DIODIA SCANDENS AND PHYLLANTHUS AMARUS ON SOME CLINICAL ISOLATES

ABSTRACT
Diodia scandens and Phyllanthus amarus extracts were investigated for their antimicrobial properties against pure cultures of clinical isolates of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans (fungi). The isolates were obtained from department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology of University of Benin Teaching Hospital and the plants were collected from Novena University, Ogume and its environs. The absolute and local (gin) ethanol extracts were obtained by soxhlet extraction and the antimicrobial activities were determined using the agar-well and broth dilution method. The results indicated that the extracts at different concentrations tested inhibited the growth of at least one organism. The concentration at 200mg/ml inhibited the isolates thus having the highest zone of growth inhibition of 26.7±2.89mm. The MICs of the extracts was 50mg/ml while the MBCs were at 200mg/ml. The result confirmed the traditional use of these plants as an effective antimicrobial agents against various infectious diseases and thus establish W.H.O’s collaboration with traditional medicinal practitioners and pharmaceutical companies in the development of new drugs that could combat microbial resistance and toxic side effects of chemosynthetic drugs. The aim of this study is to determine the potency of Diodia scandens, which is not well- researched on, cum the comparative efficacy of D. scandens and P. amarus vis-à-vis the solvent of extraction.
