ABSTRACT
Tabernaemontana divaricata (L.) R. Br. (family Apocyanaceae) has been used in Indian system of medicine for the treatment of various diseases. In the presentstudy, the antioxidant potential and free radical scavenging activity of aqueous leaf extract was screened using different in vitro assays, including ammoniummolybdate method, DPPH radical quenching assay, scavenging capacity towards hydroxyl radical, lipid peroxide and hydrogen peroxide and ability to chelatemetal ion complexes. The results were compared with the standard antioxidants such as ascorbic acid, butylated hydroxy toluene and EDTA. The enzymaticand non enzymatic antioxidants were also determined using established assay procedures. Present study indicated that aqueous extract of T. divaricata haspotent antioxidant activity and is a good source of enzymatic and non enzymatic antioxidants. It also justifies the therapeutic applications of the plant.
