ABSTRACT
The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate the antioxidant properties and total phenolic content of ethanolic extract of aerial parts of Coleus spicatus. The antioxidant activity was assessed by DPPH scavenging activity, iron chelating activity and estimation of total phenol. The ethanolic extract of Coleus spicatus had shown very significant DPPH (1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity compared to standard antioxidant. The DPPH radical scavenging activity of the extract increased with the increasing concentration of the plant extract. In DPPH free radical scavenging assay IC50 value of ethanolic extract of Coleus spicatus and Rutin were found to be 290μg/ml and 480μg/ml respectively. Good Iron chelating activity was observed in ethanolic extract of C.spicatus. Noticeable amounts of phenolic content was found in ethanolic extract of Coleus spicatus. These in vitro assays indicate that this plant extracts is a better source of natural antioxidant, which might be helpful in preventing the progress of various oxidative stresses.
