ABSTRACT
Automedication is defined as the act of administering medicines without medical prescription. The selectionand use of medicines are made by individuals uncapables to do this, aiming to cure diseases or to reduce theirsymptoms. This practice may mask symptoms of base diseases that may become worse and lead patient todeath. The automedication has being used with greater intensity in Brazil, particularly in poor regions, wherepopulation has no access to health care and in high-middle class, which are better instructed, what confershigher self-confidence to this practice. Studies propose that the orientation of health professionals andgeneral population; the development of public policies to increase structure and human resources in all unitsof health, as well as appropriate supervision of advertising and sale of medicines without medicalprescription, are key to minimize automedication and the damages caused by this practice.
