ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was to assess the food consumption pattern, the body composition and the lipidic profle of hypertension patients attended by a team of The Family Health Program, in Teresina / PI. The sample consisted of 45 patients with confirmed diagnoses of hypertension. The analyses showed that 87% of the patients were sedentary; 75.6% were overweight; 17.8% had lower than recommended levels of HDl-c; 71.1% had high levels of LDL-c and 62.2% high levels of triglycerides. Regarding the assessment of diet, the findings revealed a low energetic consumption, high levels of sodium and protein, as well as a low fibers intake. Therefore, this group presented various risk factors for cardiovascular problems such as: overweight, hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia and sedentarism. The analysis of the results also sowed the need for implementing strategies using educational measures that bring about lifestyle changes to control these risk factors and the harm they cause to health.
