BEHAVIOR OF ELITES INBRED LINES OF CORN FOR RESISTANCE TO CORN STUNT

ABSTRACT
In February of 2004, in the experimental farm of UNESP/Jaboticabal (SP) two experiments were installed with the objective of evaluating, in two groups of elite inbred line, one with 11 inbred line and the other with 96, the resistance to corn stunt. At the end of each replication, the following commercial hybrids were planted as witness: (STRIKE, A2555, XB8010, XB7011, XB7012). The randomized block experimental design was used 3 replicates and plots whit 3m spaced to 0,90m x 0,20m. As embroidery, rehearsals of 6 popcorn “ lines PIONEER Zélia “ were installed because of its high susceptibility to the corn stunt. At the time of kernel fulfillment, the evaluations were performed for incidence of corn stunt based on the percentage of plants per plot presenting the symptom of the disease. Other fenological characteristics and production were evaluated. The incidence of corn stunt under 10 percent was considered as a selection criterion. For experiment 1 the inbred line CR800486A was selected, which is highly resistant to corn stunts and inbred lines CR800425A, CR800434A, CR800439A, and CR800442A which are moderately resistant. Among 96 inbred lines (Experiment 2), the inbred lines PH970, PH1098, PH1977 and PH2507 were selected, with high resistance to corn stunts and the inbred lines PH1188-1, PH1966, PH1977, PH2026 which were moderately resistant to corn stunt. The obtained results demonstrate presence of genetic variability for resistance to the corn stunt inside of the two groups of the evaluated elite inbred lines which facilitates future improvement works seeking the attainment of superior hybrids.
