Beta–thalassemias syndromes are a group of hereditary blood disorders which are characterized by anomalies in synthesis of beta-globin chain of hemoglobin.Hydroxyurea drug aid to increase in fetal hemoglobin production and decrease in cell number due to inhibition of proliferation. This review focuses on the reportsof several researchers who worked to treat thalassemia by inducing production of fetal hemoglobin in adult by the help of some lead compound identified frombiological material such as fungi, plant extract & agro-industry in compare to hydroxyurea effects for the possible pharmacological treatment of beta-thalassemia.Some of the hemoglobin inducers from natural world are Resveratrol, Rapamycin, Angelicin and linear psoralens, Ethanol extract, Mithramycine andCucurbitacin-D. After studying these compounds on the basis of clinical parameters, we concluded that combined use of different inducer as might be useful to maximize fetalhemoglobin and are more responsive & causes fewer side effects than hydroxyurea.
