ABSTRACT
Language is heterogeneous, it means, each community has a specific linguistic behavior. This fact implies linguistic variations and discourse changes, so that speakers' idiosyncrasies are pertinent to a descriptive study of language. These variants, which may include gender (male or female), age, formality and informality, geographic factors, are frequently expressed by some prosodic variation regarding the the vocalic segments. The objective of this research is to offer some considerations about the oral unstressed vowel system of Northeast portuguese in Brasil, including the phenomena of vowel neutralization and harmonization.
