The simple circuits that are studied in the basic courses of electromagnetism are composed of lumped parameter elements. To clarify the behavior of a lumped parameter element we began studying the fields surrounding the structure. After analyzing the meaning of the quasi-static fields we introduce the notion of distributed parameters or transmission lines. In particular, we analyze a transmission line with a simple geometry that allows us to calculate the fields surrounding the structure accurately for all frequencies. In the low frequency limit we return to a lumped parameter circuit of alternating current. This allows us to find not only the impedance but also the fields and surface charges on the circuits that are very useful for conceptual understanding of the behavior of a circuit.
