Oxidative stress is suggested to play a major role in the development of diabetes mellitus. There is an increasing demand for the natural anti-diabetic agents, because of their non toxic, anti-oxidant and hypoglycemic activity. The present study was aimed to investigate the effect of aminoguanidine on the levels of cardiac antioxidant, lipid peroxides, biochemical and structural changes in the experimental mice groups. Experimental duration consists of eight weeks, mice were divided into four groups (group I-IV), consist of six animals in each group. Streptozotocin (100 mg/kg tail vein injection) administered mice were used as diabetic control.Streptozotocin administered mice were treated with Aminoguanidine (1 g/kg) for eight weeks. Administration of aminoguanidine diabetic rats has remarkably improved the elevated levels of fasting blood glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin levels. A significant decrease in lipid peroxidation and increase in the activities of key antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and reduced glutathione (GSH) contents in heart tissue of diabetic rats were observed. Upon aminoguanidine treatment the histological and electron transmission microscopic studies also revealed the the potent cardio protective effect of aminoguanidine. Our studies demonstrate the anti-hyperglycemic and anti-oxidative efficacy of aminoguanidine which could exert beneficial effectsagainst the diabetes and associated free radicals complications in heart tissue.
