ABSTRACT
The case describes the success factors in the implementation of the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), an innovative process at the National Cancer Institute (Instituto Nacional de Cancer [INCA]). PACS is composed of computer systems and components that are used for capturing, transferring, storing and displaying digital information. In describing the implementation of a change in healthcare processes, facilitating factors and barriers to change, and the benefits achieved, this teaching case aims to promote a discussion about what management actions are appropriate to the transformation performed. Thus, it can be used as an exercise for classification of innovations, understanding the difficulties faced in the implementation and adoption of innovations in processes, and analysis of the impacts produced by such innovations. The case can be used in the disciplines Management of Innovation and Technology Management, at both undergraduate and graduate levels to support discussion on such topics as innovation in processes, technology management, implementation and adoption of innovations, and risks and impacts of innovation, among others.
