Characteristics of tree tomato (Cyphomandra betaceae [Cav] Sendtn) fruits based in aril coloration, at the Venezuelan Andes Zone

Fruits of Tomato Tree are cultivated at the Andes zone, where plants are growing and development very well at the Trujillo State in Venezuela. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physical and chemical characteristics of Tomato Tree fruits, based really on the red and yellow arils present at the seeds. Fruits were harvest at the optimum mature ripening stage, washed, dried and put on the plastic baskets for to be carried in to the Postharvest Lab. A completely randomized design for 500 fruits and 5 replications for each treatment of 100 fruits (yellow and red pulp) was conducted. Characteristics physical and chemical were determined on the fruits edible part, the results of these parameters were evaluated through the variance analysis and the Means Duncan´s test. The red aril Tomato Tree fruits resulted with the highest values on fresh weight and equatorial diameter. The polar diameter was with the same significance on both fruits groups. The pericarp plus exocarp parameter on Tomato Tree fruit resulted with highest significance for yellow than red aril´s fruits. In reference to the weight values of pericarp plus mesocarp at the red aril Tomato Tree fruits were higher than for yellow aril fruits. The weight of gelatinous mass plus seeds in the fruits, reached the highest values for the red aril Tomato Tree fruit. For solids soluble content or Brix in the fruits the results obtained were no significatives, while for pH values to the red aril Tomato Tree fruits resulted with high significance than those with yellow aril fruits. The tritatable acidity on yellow aril Tomato Tree fruits reached the highest significance values. Tomato tree fruits with red aril improve a major content of agri-sweet balance given for a high coefficient relation SST %/%Acid.
