ABSTRACT
Ocimum gratissimum L., Lamiaceae, popularly known in Brazil as alfavacão, alfavaca and alfavaca-cravo is a traditional medicinal plant used to treat severaldiseases. The objective of this research was to determine parameters concerning the characterization and quality control of Ocimum gratissimum L leaf powderand development of a standardized ethanolic extract. The present research describes the Pharmacognostic evaluation of leaf powder, like ash content, particle sizedistribution, volatile content and intumescence index; and the Phytochemical prospection, that revealed the presence of flavonoids, resins, steroids andtriterpenoids. Moreover, the presence of rosmarinic acid in this material plant was investigated by thin layer chromatography. The standardized ethanolic extractwas obtained by percolation and characterized as pH, relative density, viscosity, solid content. Furthermore, the identification and quantification of rosmarinic acidcontent in this extract was evaluated by HPLC.
