ABSTRACT
Radical consideration of the situation and regulation of librarianship is necessary, especially in the light of challenges posed by information society. A comparative survey of library legislation shows that certain degree of caution is required, and the extent of risk depends upon the ability for a realistic comprehension of the conditions of the development of librarianship. Connectedness with national and global information strategy is of utmost importance, and merits at least as much attention as legislation. However, a Library Act is not something indispensable;moreover, it can comprise regulations concerning the system which includes ali libraries (national library service) or only regulations concerning public libraries. In any čase, a clear vision of the development of Slovenian jibrarianship is absolutely necessary.
