The mobile agent paradigm has revolutionised thedistributed computing environment. There are differentparadigms used in distributed computing, such as - clientserverparadigm, remote procedure paradigm and mobileagent paradigm. The client-server is based upon the conceptof a server, which serves the various request of the clientsand in remote procedure call approach, a machine canconnect to another machine and retrieve the informationremotely. The mobile agent technology is built upon theadvancement in computing and communication technologyover the wired and wireless networks. Mobile agents are thesoftware programs that can migrate from one machine toanother machine in a homogeneous as well asheterogeneous environment. It can migrate in connected aswell disconnected network. On each machine, the agentinteracts with stationary service agents and other resourcesto accomplish its task. Mobile agents are particularlyattractive in distributed information retrieval applications.By moving to the location of an information resource, theagent can search the resource locally, eliminating thetransfer of intermediate results across the network, by thisproperty, mobile agent reduce the end-to- end latency. Inthis paper, we try to point out the benefits and limitations ofthese paradigms.
