ABSTRACT
In wireless sensor networks the collection of data from a set of sensors toward a frequent sink over a tree based routing topology is a primary operation. It is important to provide an assurance on the delivery time as well as increase the rate of such data collection in many applications. The objective of minimizing the number of time slots required to complete a converge cast is first consider as time scheduling on a single frequency channel. The use of multi-frequency scheduling can be sufficient to eliminate most of the interference as we also evaluate the performance of various channel assignment methods. We examine and estimate a number of different techniques using sensible simulation models under the many-to-one communication prototype known as converge cast. To alleviate the effects of interference we combine scheduling with transmission power control, and show that while power control helps in reducing the schedule length under a single frequency, setting up transmissions using multiple frequencies is more proficient. When interference is completely eliminated, then lower bounds on the schedule length are given, and the algorithms that achieve these bounds are proposed.
