Conception of language and literature: approaches

The aim of this paper is to provide a discussion about the relationship between literature and language. In order to discuss this relationship, I argue that we need to consider a language and literature conception that integrates subject and language. If we separate these objects, a very common fact in schools nowadays, the use of literary language as a mere pretext to continue teaching the classical dichotomy between standard language (considered a correct model to follow) and a popular language (considered full of mistakes and needs to be constantly re-elaborated) won’t offer us an opportunity to think those objects. If we teachers continue to act this way in our own practice, we may lose the best thing literature offers to us through language: its human force (Antonio Candido, 1995).
