ABSTRACT
History of the competition in the Indo-'Trinidadian community between the modern-'izing élite and the traditional élite. The first aspired to adapt the Indians to the political and cultural environment of a predominantly creole/Western society. The second wanted to preserve the existing culture and religion. Since the mid-1950s the traditional élite has achieved ascendancy at the mass level of Indo-Trinidadian community organization.
