ABSTRACT
Grounded on a research about the viola and violist, this article deals with wider questions related to the sociological approach to music at the epistemological, theoretical and methodological levels, which the author considers to be particularly relevant nowadays. The need to capture the music “itself” – including its materiality – in sociological analysis (avoiding the loss of the object that happens in the approaches grounded on the notion of “art worlds” and also, up to a considerable extent, in the perspectives based on the tradition of French structuralism) should be highlighted, as well as the urgency to overcome the dichotomy between the “aesthetic” and the “social”. The proposals presented here derive from the articulation of the author’s own work with other recent developments in music sociology (specifically DeNora and Hennion), as well as in the psychology of music (E. Clarke). The importance of elements from ANT (actor-network theory, specifically Latour), Bourdieu’s “theory of practice” and of certain analytical frameworks and studies developed within social psychology must be stressed as well, as these constitute important resources for the research and discussion. Methodologically, this case study consists on a critical historiography of the instrument based on documental analysis, combined with ethnography (participation-observation) afforded by the double-status of the author as a sociologist and a violist. Additionally, semi-structured interviews have been made to violists and other musicians
