Alcohol consumption among University Students Newly Entering the Health Sciences Faculty.Alcohol consumption among future health professionals acquires special relevance because they should model healthy behaviors for the rest of the population. The objective of this study was to describe alcohol use by newly-entering students to the College of Health Sciences of a Venezuelan University. Methodology: a co relational descriptive research was carried out, based on an observational crosssectional design, on a population of 440 students enrolled in the introductory course, year 2007. A structured survey was applied. The statistics used were frequencies, chi2, and anova. Results: The average age was 17.56 ± 1.54 years, 77% females, 97% were single. The average age when students first tried alcohol was 14.84 ± 2.22 years. 80.8% had consumed alcohol, and 40 % had recentlyconsumed it. Beer, vodka and wine were the most used drinks, with significant differences among the various Health Sciences Schools (p< 0.05). Those consuming alcohol drank an average of 4.33 ± 7.38drinks or bottles of beer. Occasional consumption prevailed in 75.4%. In 49.8%, reason for consumption was sharing with friends. In conclusion, the population under study presented a high risk factor for alcohol consumption, which calls for a preventive treatment at the time when they begin their studies in the new environment of the university.
