ABSTRACT
"My collaborations with artists from Communists countrieshave been fortuitous. In the 1960’s I remember standing inschool hallways with sirens blaring—we’d protect the backsof our necks from the possibility of flying glass once the bombhit. Cuba- Russia- China- Vietnam –these were evil countries.During my trips to Cuba and Vietnam, I was lucky enough torealize that the citizens of these countries are just like us. Theyare proud of their country, they work hard, laugh, eat, showoff their children, worry about health care, world politics, cost of living, the next job and how to craft a meaningful bodyof art.""Since 2003 I have worked in eight different print shops inHavana and offered book arts and printmaking workshopsat individual studios and universities. These print shops aretypically Cuban- one foot in the past, one in the present andone looking to the future. The process of creating an aquatintlooks more like a Santería ceremony, shaking the rosin dustover a plate and heating it with an oily flame."Article in both English and Spanish
