ABSTRACT
It has been approximately estimated that 50-60% ofindividual differences in risk for alcoholism is genetic andthis proportion is equal by man and woman. The maingoal of this review article is to describe the current statusof associations and linkage investigations in alcoholdependence studies. There are at least three approachesto identify important genes: first based on targeting geneson their importance in influencing alcohol sensitivity. Thetargeted gene can be overexpressed, undrexpressed ordisrupted (gene knock-out). Second, one can seek genesthat are important via their different expression. Third, one can seek gene variations that are associated withalcohol sensitivity. The first approach can be made onlyin animals. Each approach will be reviewed.
