This paper describes the introduction of a teaching and learning strategy devised to increase student attendance and contribution in a first year module. The concerns that prompted the intervention arediscussed, as are the implementation and outcomes. The planned intervention involved introducing group presentations, formative assessment and feedback, with the ‘action research cycle’ guiding andmonitoring the intervention. The article concludes by identifying increased student attendance, higher levels of commitment and a greater responsibility for their own learning and contribution to themodule’s success.
