ABSTRACT
Use of fingerprint characteristics and other biometrics for identification is a common practice now-a-days. The biometrics hardware is available at a reasonable cost, but most of the commercial products are like a black box and gives the fingerprint images in the Personal Computer (PC) without the information such as ridge patterns, minutiae details, etc. Also, it is very difficult to perform image processing techniques such as segmentation, thinning, pattern matching etc. Hence, such systems are not useful for a researcher in the field of Biometrics. This work attempts to develop a simple biometric system using the commercially available fingerprint scanner (500 dpi resolution) to access the raw image data for research purposes. The developed system can be directly interfaced with the Universal Serial Bus (USB) port of the PC and accessed through the application software written in Visual Basic. Studies such as quality of the fingerprint image, peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and cryptography standards were conducted on the acquired fingerprint images, which proved the suitability of this system for finger print research.
