ABSTRACT
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a chronic disease with its etiology not yet clarified, with possible genetic, sociocultural and environmental influences. It causes damage in the joints, mainly in the hands and feet, characterizing painful situations with a wide range in the life of the sufferer. , therefore justifying a multi-subject approach in its treatment. To increase the patient’s quality of life, helping them recognize psychological disturbances adverse to the disease’s improvement, as well as teaching techniques to deal with them, there is the Project “Psychological Evaluation and Listening in sufferers of Rheumatoid Arthritis: The Voice of Pain”. This study aims to identify and understand the possible changes which occurred, after diagnosis, in the social lives of the subject that constitute the Project, through psychological listening. The disease, from the perspective of the psychologist, is seen as psychosocial phenomenon, historically constructed, containing ideologies regarding the illness and the role of sick people in society; it is considered part of the interaction between the patient’s subjectivity and their context, against a reductionist view of the concept of health/disease. The results show that recognizing the limitations, the doctor-patient relationship, the family, the working activity, the accessibility and the personal strategies to deal with the disease can become risk factors to the subject, as well as give opportunities for the development of potentialities towards the disease. Psychology, from its insertion in the medical services, especially in the public service, can become a protective factor and one of promotion of individual and group development.
