Dendrimers are a unique class of synthetic macromolecules having highly branched, three dimensional, nanoscale architecture with very low polydispersity and highfunctionality. These features have made their application in nanotechnology, pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry particularly attractive. The syntheticprocedures developed for dendrimer preparation permit nearly complete control over the critical molecular design parameters, such as size, shape, surface/interiorchemistry, flexibility, and topology by virtue of which these macromolecules offer diverse applications in drug delivery, solubility enhancement, gene therapy anddiagnostic field. This article provides an insight into the structure, synthesis, properties, types and the applications of dendrimers in the bio-medical field. Thebiocompatibility of dendrimers follows patterns known from other small particles. Cationic surfaces show cytotoxicity; however, derivatization with fatty acid orPEG chains, reducing the overall charge density and minimizing contact between cell surfaces and dendrimers, can reduce toxic effects.
