This paper explores the problems that face a would-be researcher in tourism and hospitality in gaining an appointment as a university lecturer, as well as the barriers to tourism being positioned as a scientific-discipline in Argentina. Based on personal past experience and informal interviews with some colleagues, a theoretical model is constructed to understand the reasons why scientific research in tourism is somewhat immature in Argentina. The goals of this paper are four-fold: to consider the limitations to teaching tourism in the private sector, to describe the structural and personal obstacles faced by doctorate students, to consider the disinterest of students and lecturers with respect to what is being taught in universities, and to understand the connection between central and peripheral countries in educational issues.
