Effectiveness of elastography in the differential diagnosis of benign and malign thyroid nodules and ıts comparison with fine needle aspiration biopsy

ABSTRACT
Aim: The purpose of this study is to compare thyroidelastography, which was performed to patients who werediagnosed with thyroid nodule and indicated operation,with FNAB and histopatology results and to define itsefficiency in early preoperative period of thyroid cancer.Material and method: Sixteen patients, who applied toour clinic between September 2010-August 2011 withthyroid nodule diagnosis and indicated operation, havebeen evaluated prospectively. Thyroid nodule elastographyand FNAB were performed to all patients in preoperativeperiod. Sensitivity, specificity, positive andnegative predictive values in FNAB and elastography,which were applied to thyroid nodules, have been determinedby comparing elastography and FNAB resultswith postoperative histopatology results.Results: Sensitiviy, specificity, positive prediction valueand negative prediction value of elastography and FNABin carcinoma determination are, 58.3%, 85.4%, 50%,89.1% and 83.3%, 89.6%, 66.6%, 95.5%, respectively.Conclusion: Even though sensitivity and specificity valuesof elastography in preoperative diagnosis of thyroidnodules were determined to be lower in comparisonwith FNAB, elastography is a new supplementary diagnosticmethod in preoperative diagnosis of thyroid nodules.Especially it can be beneficial for follicular lesionsand some cases with undetermined FNAB results in differentialdiagnosis.
