THE EFFECTS OF SCHOOL AND FAMİLY FACTORS ON SPORTS ACTİVİTİES FOR SPORTS STUDENTS İN PRİMARY SCHOOLS: A CASE STUDY OF SAKARYA

ABSTRACT
Sports which starts from childhood has got a big importance for the adults who will have responsibility in the society to gain good habits and establish healthy relations both between individuals and societies. Guiding students for sports activities at childhood is effective to help them gain good habits. It is a must to make a vast research in the field of sport to raise sport and athlete to the place they deserve in society. To enable an athlete to be successful, the factors affecting him/her in negative ways should be eliminated. Either affecting child’s sports and personality development negatively during basic education period or even not affecting them determines his/her success borders in the future. From the sociological perspective, first family then school is important institutions to provide sports success. The aim of this research is to present the effect of school and family on sporting activities for sport students in primary schools. In this study a descriptive survey model is applied to detect the present situation. A poll has been carried out for the purpose of getting datum Girl – Boy athlete students who still do different sports activities in their elementary education (4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th grades) constitute the group of research. Five hundred students participated in the survey answering the poll which has got 20 questions. Descrpitive statistics of the research, frequencies and percentiles, have been calculated by using SPSS 15.0 (Statistical Packet for the Social Science). According to the results of the present study, it has been determined that the level of parents’ education and family income, the existence of a sportsman in family and attitude of the family towards sport affect child's doing sports; especially family's interest in sports affects positively students' sports activities. In addition to these, physical education activities in elementary education, application of these activities, sports environment of students and interest level to the athlete students give a direction to their sport interest. The lack of sports equipments and inefficiency of sports facilities at primary schools discourages students from sports whereas the positive attitude of the school towards sports raises their interest in sport.
