ABSTRACT
Early image retrieval techniques were based on textual annotation of images. Manual annotation of imagesis a burdensome and expensive work for a huge image database. It is often introspective, context-sensitiveand crude. Content based image retrieval, is implemented using the optical constituents of an image suchas shape, colour, spatial layout, and texture to exhibit and index the image. The Region Based ImageRetrieval (RBIR) system uses the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and a k-means clustering algorithmto segment an image into regions. Each region of the image is represented by a set of opticalcharacteristics and the likeness between regions and is measured using a particular metric function onsuch characteristics.
