ABSTRACT
This article focuses on analyzing the Allegory of the heavenly Jerusalemand the Franciscan Order, painting formerly considered to be anonymous, located in the sacristy of the church of San Miguel in Mexquitic (San Luis Potosi, Mexico). The author reports on the findings –based on primary sources and on-site examination of the canvas– that enabled him to determine the artist and date of this painting. He likewise discusses the formal and iconographic aspects of the work, explaining the military and spiritual discourse by which the mystery of the Immaculate Conception was defended by the Spanish monarchy and the Franciscan Order. As a result, a new title is proposed: The Mystery of the Immaculate ConceptionEste artículo se centra en analizar la pintura que antiguamente se presentaba como anónima y bajo el título de “Alegoría de la Jerusalén celeste y la orden franciscana” existente en la sacristía de la iglesia de San Miguel en Mexquitic (San Luis Potosí, México). A través del texto damos cuenta de los descubrimientos –basados en fuentes primarias y en el análisis en sitio de la obra– que nos permiten determinar tanto el autor como datar la obra. Se analizan además aspectos tanto formales como iconográficos, dando cuenta del discurso espiritual y militar a través del cual se plantea la defensa del misterio de la Inmaculada Concepción encabezado por la monarquía hispánica y la orden franciscana, proponiendo por tanto, un nuevo título a la misma: “El misterio de la Inmaculada Concepción”.
