The violence that currently exists in Africa includes a traumatic element rooted in the colonial past. This article seeks to understand these wounds that are still spreading throughout African societies. With this purpose in mind we will examine colonial violence, and particularly its mental dimension, along with the responses to it that arose in the colonized areas. An explanation will be outlined concerning the struggle for the world, in an Arendtian sense, and its relationship to politics and violence. Finally, we will argue for a theoretical distinction between the two, suggesting that politics in Africa should endeavor to understand and mitigate the colonial trauma.
