ABSTRACT
WirelessSensors are subjected to harsh deploymentconditions and have constrained resources.Inthispaper, we analyse the effectiveness of LEACHprotocol in extending the lifetime for energy-constrained wireless sensor networks.Based onLEACH protocol, an improved protocol termed asLEACH-Ris proposed. LEACH-Rimproves theselection ofcluster-head by considering the residualenergy of the nodesduring selection of cluster-head,thereby reducing thepossibility of low-energy nodesbeing selected. Based on both residual energy anddistance to base station, relaying node is chosenfrom clusterheads to become the relay node betweenbase station and other cluster-heads. The simulationresults suggestLEACH-R protocol could balancenetwork energy consumption and extend the networklife cycle more effectively as compared to LEACH.
