ABSTRACT
Leaf area index is of recognized importance for different crops, specially, to estimate yield. The available methods of acquiring leaf area index estimates are hard, slow and do not contemplate the leaf area damaged by pests and plant diseases, and the senescing leaf area, which becomes the active photosynthetic leaf area determination imprecise. The maize leaf areas, under two irrigation systems (sprinkler and furrow), were estimated by the Montegomery method and by the image analysis technique (using SIARCS 3.0® software). The total leaf area given by both methods were similar; but the image analysis provided the damaged and useful leaf area determination.
