The main goal of this paper was to propose a model to estimate the freight demand for Brazil’s North-South Railway. The evaluation of the amount of cargo that could be attracted by the railway was done through the use of a Multicommodity Minimum Cost Flow model. During 2005, the results showed a total of 1.2 million tons of inter-regional soybean flows that have potential to be moved through this rail line between Estreito (MA) and São Luís (MA). This model has shown to be a practical tool for evaluating the potential flows trough a transportation infrastructure and for identifying the origins and products related to these flows.
