The concept of learning strategies is presented and explaincd as being composed of cognitive and affective components plus metacognition. Teaching these leaming strategies in a more systematic manner is suggested as a way of íncreasíng active student participation and responsabílíty, helping to make education more satisfactory and effective. The cognitive strategíes are divided into those of processing for entering new elements ínto the memory and execution strategíes for recovering and applying leamed material. Affective strategíes are those which improve the students ability to manage reinforcement contingencies. attribution of control. anxíety, self-image and interests in learniDg situations. Metacognition. or the degree of awareness of cognitive and affective strategíes, processes. states and events, is cited as being important for planning and troubleshooting in initial leaming or at any point of breakdown of automated processes in executíon. The importante of taking cultural variables into account when developing leaming strategies is mentioned and suggestions are made conceming the implications of these strategies for design of successful leaming
