ABSTRACT
A study of the stem anatomy of eleven species of Lychnophora was carried out. All of the studied species showed common characters like: stem circulate in cross section, epidermis uniestrata with stomas, many epidermic cells are trichomes bases, the trichomes constitute a thick layer around the stem, which would be able to act avoiding the excessive transpiración, protecting against the high temperatures or the action of fire. The epidermis remains long time still when the secondary growth has begun and the felogen has initiated its activity. The medulla occupies the biggest proportion of the stem, and it is observed the fusion of the foliar sheath to the stem observed. It is determined a phyllotaxis in which the leaves are arranged in multiple spirals around the stem.
