ABSTRACT
During 6 weeks an experimental growth trial with the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg, 1873) was carried out in the lagoon of Barra de Navidad, Jalisco, México in a rack bottom culture. Oyster spat, initially with a mean length of 8.02 ± 1.97 mm and a mean weight of 0.06 ± 0.02 g, reached at the end of the experimental period, an average length of 6.1 ± 0.76 cm and a mean weight of 38.74 ± 11.21 g, with a final survival of 48%. Based on these results, the possibility of successful development of C. gigas cultures under the environmental conditions of the lagoon is suggested. In this paper, the management conditions, as well as the main problems experienced over the last five years in farming this species in Barra de Navidad are discussed.
