EVALUATING THE CONSCIOUS LEVELS OF PARENTS ON THE EFFECTS OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORT ACTIVITIES ON THEIR HANDICAPPED CHILDREN DURING SPECIAL EDUCATION

ABSTRACT
The main purpose of this study was to determine the conscious levels of parents on the effects of physical education and sport activities on social, psychological, physical, mental and movement development of their handicapped children during special education period so that findings of this study could help institutions giving education and counseling to parents with handicapped children think, discuss, program development and conduct new studies in Turkey.Data gathering instrument was developed by the researcher, and its validity and reliability were tested before the study. The instrument was applied to parents (fathers and mothers) having handicapped children at Çankaya, Etimesgut (Eryaman), Keçiören, Sincan and Yenimahalle Special Education and Rehabilitation Centers in Ankara. 54 mothers and 27 fathers were participated the study voluntarily.Findings showed that doctor recommendation was the first factor on private education school-starting of handicapped. Fathers and mothers stated a positive opinion about the help of physical education and sport activities on the whole development of their handicapped children. In addition, parents emphasized the necessity of physical education and sports activities during special education period of their handicapped children, and also they have preferred swimming as the most wanted sport activity.
