ABSTRACT
The aim of this study is to develop a sustained release buccal patch of salbutamol sulphate using chitosan as release controlling factor and to evaluate drug releasemechanism from polymer (chitosan) as per various release kinetic models. Buccal Patches were prepared by solvent casting technique; glycerine was used asplasticizer to give flexibility to the patch. The formulated patches were also characterized for physical and chemical parameters and results were found inacceptable limits. Different kinetic models were applied to drug release data in order to evaluate release mechanisms and kinetics. Criteria for selecting the mostappropriate model was based on linearity (coefficient of correlation). The drug release data fit well to the Higuchi and Hixon crowell expression. Drug releasemechanism was found as a complex mixture of diffusion, swelling and erosion.
