EVALUATION OF FORAGE SORGHUM PERFORMANCE FOR THE SEMIARID IN PERNAMBUCO

ABSTRACT
The objective of this research was to evaluate the performance of 51 genetic materials in the semi-arid conditions of Pernambuco, Brazil. The adopted experimental design was randomized blocks with common treatments, consisting of 49 genotypes (36 Sorghum x sudangrass hybrids, four male-sterile Sorghum lines and nine varieties of sudangrass), distributed in seven groups of seven genotypes, with two more common treatments in each group, formed by the varieties PU7664128 and IPA-SF-25, and three replications per treatment. The studied variables were height of the plant, time needed for 50% flowering, dry matter yield and water use efficiency. Plant height was not efficient enough to select genotypes sorghum x “sudangrass”. The hybrid Hss-14 was the most productive for dry matter yield and responded the best to water use efficiency.
