The aim of the study is to evaluate teacher education system in Turkey from different perspectives and offersome suggestions about the current developments in the field of teacher education. For this purpose, at thebeginning of the paper, we elaborate the foundations of Turkish teacher education system in terms ofepistemological perspectives. Secondly, we scrutinize the implementations and policies on teacher educationin the first era of Turkish Republic. Thirdly, we evaluate the developmental efforts of the Council of HigherEducation in the field of teacher education between 1996 and 1998. During this period as a reform actdepartments and graduate programs were changed at all education faculties by the intervention of theCouncil of Higher Education. These direct interventions of the Council of Higher Education make negativeeffect on the development of teacher education. Nowadays, we also see the same direct interventions made bythe Council of Higher Education. Lastly, we offer some implications for teacher education with regard torecent developments in developed countries.
