ABSTRACT
Probiotics and prebiotics are live microbial food supplements which may be termed as “Functional food”. The term “functional foods” comprises some bacterialstrains and products of plant and animal origin containing physiologically active compounds beneficial for human health and reducing the risk of chronic diseases.Several probiotic preparations are used in prevention or treatment of various conditions such as infectious diarrhoea in children, recurrent Clostridium difficileinduced infections and postoperative pouchitis. The benefit of these food supplements in other gastrointestinal infections, prevention of postoperative bacterialtranslocation, irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease continues to emerge. This review addresses the concept of probiotics and prebiotics andtheir benefits in human life.
